When Hugo’s opened its door in December 2012 we had no idea how the business would go. Whilst we would have food, the focus was going to be on coffee – and try to serve the best coffee we could. But would the good folk of Laurencekirk take to the coffee culture or see that as something for city dwellers? We had what is called a “soft start” – no advertising, leaflet drop or fanfare when the door opened; rather, let our coffee attract on its own merit. Three days into our first week came the pre-Christmas late night shopping evening – it snowed and we had customers queuing to get in. And customers continued to come in the following months and years – yes, coffee is for Laurencekirk!

We’ve had our ups and downs, of course. Linda, and then Mark, who had the original idea for the business, decided to move onto new ventures. But Hugo’s was well established as the place to meet over a coffee (or fine tea, lush chocolate or rich smoothie). We would like to thank all our loyal customers but now want to say farewell to Hugo’s. We’ve decided it’s time to hand the reins over to new faces who will carry on the tradition of the very best coffee…
