Having been out of commission for some months and generally out of puff, I have become aware of the shortage of public seating around Laurencekirk.

From the sheltered housing to The Scotmid store there were until last week no seats other than one in the children’s play area. Kindly Scotmid have provided a new bench outside their store as part of their 160th Anniversary celebrations.

The Council have provided picnic seats in both parks and there are memorial benches at the Masonic Hall, Mearns Academy and a few around the parks. Without a doubt the best choice has been provided by Friends of Denlethen with assistance from the Forestry Commission.

Currently Aberdeenshire Council have no budget for public benches but will accept sponsorship from community groups and individuals.

Currently it costs £350 to sponsor a bench which can then be placed on Council land.

The respective contact is Neil West of Landscape services who can be contacted on 01467 537673.

In times past there were seats on the outskirts of the town and on the roadside heading up the Garvock Hill. The old seats have been removed as they wore out leaving gaps around the town.

Walking is a great way of keeping fit and mobile so if you or your organisation can help please contact the Council or this site’s administrator.
