Laurencekirk and District Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, organised a concert in Mearns Academy Hall on Thursday evening to a very appreciative audience.

This year we were once again able to hear a group of young players from Lancashire, in a similar vein to The Wigan Youth Jazz Band who appeared year two years ago. This time the entertainment was supplied by musicians from the Blackburn and Darwen Youth Ensemble with a concert in the Big Band style.

With saxophones, trumpets and trombones and a strong percussion section the “old” Academy certainly felt the vibes! With a programme of 16 popular numbers stretching from the 1940s to a rendition of “Skyfall” there was something to cater for all ages.

President Alf Lawrie was delighted with both the degree of local support for the event and the excellent standards demonstrated by the group under the very able leadership of Paul Rigby.
